Software Security And Cyber Security – Know The Difference

Difference between Software Security And Cyber Security

In this blog post, we will discuss about the major differences between software security and cyber security, but before we proceed to draw comparisons between software security and cyber security, let’s first discuss the concepts of software security and cyber security briefly in order to move our discussion further.

Concept of Software Security

Software Security, as the name suggests, is the domain whose aim is to protect and secure software programs from malicious content that includes viruses, bugs, cookies, password attacks, malware attacks, spoofing, etc.

Norton, McAfee, Avast, Kaspersky, Quick Heal, etc. are some popular and famous companies that give security and protection to software programs from all types of malicious attack, as mentioned above.

Concept of Cyber Security

Cybersecurity, as the name suggests, is the domain that aims to protect and secure networks, systems, and programs against illegal or unauthorized attacks done by cybercriminals or hackers that include Trojan Horses, brute-force attacks, SQL Injection, ransomware attacks, etc.

Accenture, Cisco, Transmit Security, etc. are some of the popular and famous companies that provide cyber security services and protection to computer systems and other electronic devices from cyber-attacks or cyber-crimes done by cybercriminals or hackers.

Software Security vs Cyber Security

Following are the major differences between Software Security and Cyber Security: –

  • Software Security plays an important role to prevent software programs from various malicious content like viruses, malware, trojan horses etc. which allows software programs to run quicker, faster and smoother. On the other hand, Cyber Security plays an important role to protect confidential data, personal identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI) and personal data, etc.
  • Software Security’s main purpose is to make software programs free from all types of vulnerabilities and loopholes thereby, to make it impervious from all types of attacks. On the other hand, Cyber Security’s main purpose is to protect and secure network, devices, programs, data from attacks, damages & illegal or unauthorized access.
  • Software Security’s main aim is to develop robust, quality and highly efficient software that simply continues to function properly and correctly. On the other hand, Cyber Security’s main aim is to prevent and defend all types of computing assets against all types of cyber-attack or cyber-crime done by cybercriminals or hackers who are also known as threat actors.
  • Software Security deals with activities which include software design, developing secure coding guidelines for developers to follow, developing secure configuration procedures and standards for the phase of software deployment. On the other hand, Cyber Security deals with activities which include protecting and securing data, discovering threats, removing unwanted data and ensuring confidentiality as well as accessibility.
  • One of the major advantages of using Cyber Security over Software Security is that Cyber Security is highly versatile in nature as compared to Software Security because of the fact that Cyber Security protects more digital architecture in comparison to Software Security.

Conclusion

In the end, we can conclude that there might be differences between software security and cyber security, but they are both equally important to any organization or from an individual perspective. While software security can be viewed as a subset of cyber security, ultimately both focus on the goal of data protection and privacy.
