It provides recommended requirements for protecting the confidentiality of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). It is mandatory for organizations to get the NIST 800-171 certification if they process, store, or transmit sensitive information for the Department of Defense (DoD), NASA, General Services Administration (GSA), and other government agencies.
